Although you may already be familiar with a full range of spa treatments available to help you look your best as you progress through life, you may not have thought of finding anti-aging methods in your kitchen cabinet. However, some health experts say that several herbs and spices can help to compensate for the body’s natural aging process.
In general, many spices already contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can help fight disease and the signs of aging.
Ginger
There’s a good chance that you have a bottle of ginger residing in your spice rack. However, the spice can do more than give a kick to your favorite batch of cookies. Researchers from the University of Minnesota conducted a study, which found that ginger could also inhibit colon cancer cell growth. It’s also an immune system booster, which makes it worthwhile for adding to a diet at any age.
Furthermore, gingerol, an active chemical that’s part of ginger is also thought to be an anti-inflammatory, and is sometimes used in the treatment of arthritis.
Oregano
Helpful in fighting fungus and bacteria, oregano is also handy because it can be dehydrated and put into storage after the late summer and early fall harvest period. Furthermore, it’s bursting with antioxidants. In fact, just one teaspoon of oregano boasts as many antioxidants as three cups of broccoli. Many people use organic oregano oil as a holistic remedy, too.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is a very commonly used seasoning, and is also thought to be helpful in regulating blood sugar. Beyond that, it includes blood-thinning compounds that may stimulate circulation, and the spice may also be able to relieve joint stiffness.
Cinnamon is very versatile and can complement everything from your morning bowl of oatmeal, afternoon cup of chai tea, or a slice of pie for dessert after dinner. And, since it supports digestive function, you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging your sweet tooth.
